Song Snippet: Sam Fender - Will We Talk?

In a Tinder culture filled with a rise in one-night stands and casual hook ups, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that the view on physical connection is changing. Fender’s Will We Talk? explores this change and lays out the importance of genuine human connection; his song is a plea to be linked to another through communication.

His lyrics scream out a message of distraction, beginning his song with ‘Blaring loudly through the speakers / Fluorescent liquid in his beaker’; he creates the imagery of a chaotic scene, one in which the individual cannot hear what is going on around them. The distraction brought on by the wild party scene represents the lack of communication between two people who are about to connect on a physical level only – the two individuals cannot hear one another and therefore lack that verbal communicative element in which they actually get to know one another first.

Yet, the chorus states ‘And she said/ If you dance with me darling/ If you take me home/ Will we talk in the morning?’, the end of the chorus symbolising the end goal; closing on this line emphasises it and therefore indicates that it is the thing the woman is most concerned with. This desire to talk above all else shows the strength of her desire to connect to another not on a physical level, but an emotional one.

Fender is no stranger to giving his listeners important messages, with his hit single Hypersonic Missiles encapsulating a political cry for help in a capitalist world. Listen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDsFKOrLWhU
